Hi, I’m Kevin … sometimes craftsman and sometimes artist. In pursuit of visual imagery, I explore places. I am compelled from within. Sometimes the places and the images begin to tell a story; then I turn to writing.
In the immortal words of Louis Pasteur, “chance favors the prepared mind.” In advance of my visits, I research maps, events, stories, weather. For any UAS (drone) work, I give particular attention to wind forecasts and local airspace restrictions. After all the planning and preparation is done, a creative mind must also accommodate discovery and serendipity.
Commonly, a place or event cannot be fully explored in a single visit, whether the duration is two days or two weeks. Then I think to myself: I want to come back here again. I often return simply to explore anew in a different season or in different light.
So … traveler and explorer? Yes, I suppose that is a fair cop, but it is in service to visual imagery or visual stories. Sometimes the visuals, the place, the people … inspire me to write. I’ve written books about wildflowers and agricultural fairs. I’ve written poems about old tractors and freestyle aerial ski jumping.
In the lyrics of a song, John Lee Hooker tells of a small debate between his mother and father. His mother is worried that her son is hangin’ out in clubs all night long and subject to bad influences. But his father answers “You’ve got to let that boy boogie woogie; ‘cause it’s in him and it’s got to come out.” As a craftsman and artist, I must say that rings true; instinctive creative vision must be expressed.
